A lesson learned

This story is about a young girl. She was not fortunate enough to be born into a wealthy family, but unfortunate enough to have to deal with the wealthy.

She was dirty and smelly, her clothes were old, her toys broken, her house cold and run-down. Her family could afford very little. But despite all that, she was quite a happy girl, at least until she had to interact with the wealthy. They were clean, smelled good, had pretty clothes, shiny hair, nice houses and warm meals. Worst of all, they made her feel less than them. Despite all the glamour, she didn’t want to be like the wealthy, she could see that they weren’t necessarily nice people.

They ignored her most of the time, until they somehow found out that the girl had a crush on one of the boys. Then they started making fun of her. They said someone so stinky would never be able to have a rich boyfriend. As if that was the only reason hindering her from having a rich boyfriend. She lived in a system that wouldn’t allow someone of her status to become wealthy. The bullying and picking on her got worse. It seemed that their discovering her crush had put her on the bullies’ radar.

At some point she got so fed up and she just wanted to be left alone. She gathered everything she owned that could be considered valuable and went to a witch she knew of. She had seen her  before but had never spoken to her. ,Some of the stories she had heard about her were scary, she was afraid of the witch. The girl wanted the wealthy people to become poor. They should experience what it is like to have little to nothing, maybe then they would be nicer. She didn’t want them to be poor forever, just long enough for them to learn their lesson and leave her alone.

The witch couldn’t make them poor, but she could put a spell on them that would give them bad luck and make them lose their money. But a spell this strong, and for so many people, could put the witch in danger. A high risk has a high price. Sadness covered the girl’s face as she looked down. The witch understood that she didn’t have that kind of money.

Maybe the witch felt sorry for her, or she just saw an opportunity for herself – either way, she offered the little girl a deal: The witch would help her with the spell. In return, the little girl would do some shopping for her once a month, three times as long as the spell would last. And in case any problem would arise, the little girl would help her and assist her until she didn’t need her anymore.
The girl thought about it for a bit and then agreed to the deal; she wanted those kids to learn their lesson and leave her alone.

The spell stayed with the families for two years. The witch could have created a stronger spell, but she didn’t want to risk too much and she wanted to keep the girl for a bit longer. By the end of their agreement, the girl stayed with the witch. They had become quite close, and the girl wanted to learn from her. By the time the spell was revoked, the girl didn’t care about the wealthy kids anymore. She knew they had learned a lesson, and she had found something better than anything those kids would ever be able to afford.
