Fake it until you make it

And if you can’t make it, get some help in the realm of dense magic.
This is exactly what the protagonist in this next story was doing. And one thing you should know about dense magic: it never ends well.
But let’s start from the beginning….

There is a common belief that all doctors are good doctors. But like in so many other professions, there is a wide spectrum from excellent to miserable. The doctor in this story, let’s call him Mr. Doctor, was rather the latter. He didn’t want to become a doctor in the first place, but coming from a lineage of doctors, he had no choice. The only reason he graduated was his family’s influence on the college. His father was angry about having to use his influence, but it would have been worse if his son didn’t graduate and become a doctor. The father made sure to remind him of his disappointment whenever he could. Needless to say, college wasn’t Mr. Doctor’s best time.

And it continued even after college. When his father retired, Mr. Doctor took over the family practice, which had been in the family for five generations. You can imagine the father was reluctant, but Mr. Doctor was his only son, and practice couldn’t go to an outsider. And as expected from the father, it didn’t go well. The patients received misdiagnoses or the wrong medications, they weren’t happy with the treatments and Mr. Doctors work.. Sometimes he didn’t know what they had and how to help them, so he would send them to another doctor. The practice was losing patients and the father was losing patience. The pressure on Mr. Doctor was choking high.

Wanting to get out of this miserable situation, he turned to dense magic, to a well known witch in town. He’d heard that she could grant talents to those without them. He asked her to make him a great doctor, one who could successfully treat and heal people. The witch was quite happy about this request, in return she asked for all blood samples he took from his patients in return. Mr. Doctor happily agreed, since it wasn’t his blood, and the amount of blood he takes for samples is negligible.

His luck turned around almost overnight and patients started returning. He was able to help every patient, and for once, he enjoyed his job. His father’s mood improved too, and everyone was happy. He became a popular and a very trusted doctor. He liked the attention, the feeling of being needed, trusted and looked up to. For a long time he had felt out of place, but now he felt like he was exactly where he belonged.

The better things were going, the worse Mr. Doctor’s health was getting. It started with minor discomfort he could ignore, but over time he felt worse and worse. Remember when I said dense magic never ends well? Mr. Doctor couldn’t diagnose himself, and his colleagues didn’t know what he had either. He went to the witch, but she said she wasn’t a doctor and couldn’t help him. He kept working and tried to ignore his declining health, but eventually he just couldn’t.

Desperate, he sought out another witch. He visited the new witch and told her about his declining health. This witch immediately sensed some dark magic involved and grew suspicious. Mr. Doctor then hesitantly told her about his deal with the first witch. As soon as he said that, it was as clear as day to the witch what had happened. Little did Mr. Doctor know that the spell the first witch put onto him to “make him a great doctor” was actually working against him. Every time he “healed” a patient, he was giving away his own energy. No wonder his health was declining, he was unknowingly giving away his life force.

Mr. Doctor decided to end the deal with the witch, which meant everything would return to how it had been. Naturally, he started losing patients again, his father’s disappointment returned and the family practice wasn’t doing well, but at least his health was getting better.
